Quad biking in Marrakech: Agafay Desert or the Palmeraie?

Quad biking is one of the most booked activities in Marrakech, and almost every operator sends you to one of two places: the Palmeraie, the palm grove on the northern edge of the city, or the Agafay Desert, the stone desert about 40 minutes south-west. Both are fun. They are not the same ride.
We run quad trips in Agafay every afternoon, so we're biased, but this guide is meant to help you pick the right one for your trip. Below we compare the two on scenery, terrain, time, who can drive, and how a typical afternoon works.
The short answer
Choose the Palmeraie if you have a tight schedule and want a quick ride close to the city among palm trees and small villages. Choose Agafay if you want open desert landscape, views of the Atlas Mountains, varied terrain with hills and dry riverbeds, and a ride that ends at sunset. Most visitors who have half a day free pick Agafay because it feels like a real trip out of the city.
| Palmeraie | Agafay Desert | |
|---|---|---|
| Distance from the medina | About 20–30 minutes | About 40–60 minutes |
| Landscape | Palm groves, sandy tracks, villages | Rocky hills, plateaus, Atlas views |
| Terrain | Mostly flat | Rolling hills, slopes, gullies |
| Best time | Any time of day | Late afternoon into sunset |
| Usually combined with | Camel ride, tea stop | Camel ride, dinner and a show |
What the Palmeraie ride is like
The Palmeraie is a huge palm grove that wraps around the north of Marrakech. Quad routes follow sandy tracks between the palms, past small earth-walled villages and fields. It's close, easy to fit into a morning, and the terrain is gentle, which suits nervous first-time riders.
The downside is that it doesn't feel like the desert. You're riding near roads and houses, and the views are mostly of palm trunks. If your mental picture of a quad ride in Morocco is wide open landscape, the Palmeraie can feel a little tame.
What the Agafay ride is like
Agafay is a stone desert: pale, rolling hills and flat-topped plateaus with almost no vegetation, and the snow-capped High Atlas on the horizon from late autumn to spring. The tracks climb and drop, cross dry riverbeds and run along ridges, so the ride has more variety and a bit more adrenaline than the palm grove.

Because Agafay is further out, operators usually build a whole afternoon around it. Our quad trips start with a 3:00 PM pickup in Marrakech, the ride takes place in the late afternoon light, and the day ends with a camel ride and dinner with a live show as the sun goes down. You can see the full itinerary on our Agafay quad biking page.
How long is a quad ride?
Ride times near Marrakech usually range from 30 minutes to two hours. Shorter rides are good for beginners and children riding as passengers; longer rides reach further into the desert and give you time to get comfortable with the machine.
On our Quad + Camel + Dinner & Show trip you choose between two lengths:
- 40 minutes of quad with a 15-minute camel ride, about 5 hours door to door.
- 1 hour 30 minutes of quad with a 1-hour camel ride, about 6 hours door to door.
Both end with dinner and a show. If you want a different mix, for example a longer quad ride without the camel, the build-your-own option lets you pick each activity separately.
Who can drive a quad in Marrakech?
You don't need a driving licence. Rules vary by operator, so always check before booking. On our trips:
- Anyone 16 or older can drive.
- Children aged 3 to 15 can ride as a passenger behind an adult, but can't drive.
- Babies aged 0 to 2 come along free but don't ride.
Quads are shared, two people per vehicle, so couples and parents with a child usually ride together. Every group gets a short briefing and a test loop before heading out, and a guide rides at the front.
What to wear for quad biking
Dust is the one thing everyone underestimates. A scarf or buff over your nose and mouth makes the ride far more comfortable.
- Closed shoes such as trainers. No flip-flops.
- Long trousers or leggings protect your legs from the engine heat and sun.
- A scarf or buff for dust. Many people buy a cheche (desert scarf) in the medina beforehand.
- Sunglasses, even in winter.
- A warm layer from November to March. The desert cools down fast after sunset.
Helmets are provided. Leave large bags at your riad, and keep your phone in a zipped pocket.
Is quad biking in Marrakech safe?
With a reputable operator, yes. Routes are off-road tracks away from traffic, speeds are moderate, and guides set the pace for the group. The real risks come from riding too fast for your experience or riding in a group that's too big for the guides to watch. Things to check before you book:
- Helmets included and a safety briefing before the ride.
- A guide leading the convoy, with group sizes they can actually supervise.
- Clear age rules. Children shouldn't be driving.
- A free reschedule or refund if weather stops the activity.
Best time of year and time of day
Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) give the most comfortable temperatures. Summer afternoons in Agafay often go above 35 °C, so a late-afternoon start helps a lot. In winter the days are mild but evenings are cold, and the Atlas is often covered in snow, which makes for the best views of the year.
Time of day matters more in Agafay than in the Palmeraie. A ride that ends near sunset gives you softer light, cooler air and the best photos, which is why our trips start at 3:00 PM.
Getting there
Most operators include transport. With us, pickup is free from seven meeting points in central Marrakech, including Bab Agnaou and Jardin Majorelle. If you'd rather be collected from your hotel or riad door, you can book private VIP transport. Our guide on getting to the Agafay Desert covers distances and options in more detail.
Our recommendation
If you only have a morning, the Palmeraie does the job. If you can give it an afternoon, go to Agafay: the landscape is better, the ride is more varied, and ending the day with a camel ride and dinner under the stars is hard to beat.
